MONSTERS: Trailer Analysis

MONSTERS (2010) TRAILER ANALYSIS:

Opening shot: Relaxing with a fade in transition, crickets chirping as diegetic noise and mise-en-scene including children playing in the water (having fun). This contrasts what the rest of the trailer is going to be like.

The next shot establishes male lead and his reaction to loud noise. The loud noise (diegetic) has connotations of destruction and is what we connect with the title, MONSTERS.

Independent film studio brings in niche audience/fans of films created by Vertigo Films. TV filter adds grittiness to the trailer.

Over the shoulder shot reveals what the sound was. Distance and scale implies the size of the problem.

Medium close up establishes other protagonist/side character, possible love interest, assuming by her gender.

Panning shot connotes the amount of destruction caused, hyping up the audience as they want to know what caused it. The cheap CGI smoke implies how independent the film is.

Cut to blacks with text giving the briefest synopsis possible, explaining what the film is about but keeping everything vague at the same time. The font is simple and bland to make the film seem more realistic and less vibrant.

Exposition is also shown visually.

Hand held landscape shot shows collateral damage and shakiness connotes chaos in the plot.

Long shot sets up location, blue colour is desolate and eerie and the shot sets up a place for the antagonist to destroy.

Reaction shot adds to the intimidation factor. Psychologically, if they're terrified, then so should we.

Shots of blood adds to the danger, red connotes danger.

Tracking shot shows damage created over the course of the film, setting up genre as an apocalyptic horror and showing off the destruction and carnage that goes on in the film.
Bridge suggests the idea that there is narrow escape for our protagonists. This sets up tension as a hope is set up, the movie will be about getting to that hope.

U.S BORDER sign also sets up destination of safety, contrasted with crow which is a death motif.

Character in distress displays hysteria of the film and suggests that it will be emotionally draining.

Shot of car being trampled by the monster displays monster's power and gives a first glimpse of the thing without actually showing any real sign due to the dim lighting.
